I first came across Calico Critters, or Sylvanian Families as it is known in my country, when my daughter was six. I had been struggling to find a toy line that both she and I approved of as I have high standards when it comes to construction and ethics.

I want the toys my children play with to be non exploitative and nurturing while at the same time, designed well to last many years (especially if they are made of plastic).  For my son, both he and I agreed on Lego as a perfect toy but for my daughter, neither she nor I had ever been fully satisfied with the range of toys available.

When I found Calico Critters online I was embarrassed to find that they had been around for some time, here I was thinking I had discovered the latest thing, and they had actually been around since I was a child.  The reviews were overwhelmingly positive form parents and kids alike.

Children of course loved the figures; the look, feel and size of them and the overwhelmingly cute designs.

Parents loved the durability. This is a big thing with children’s toys, and it seems girl’s toys in particular. Many parents noted their experiences with other pink plastic fads that had looked great in the packet but fell apart almost as soon as they came out of the packaging. And for plastic toys that don’t break down and use oil in their construction, it is a travesty, not to mention the frustration for parents and loss of faith for kids.

If you read any of the reviews for the Calico Critters you will find that they are durable. They may look small and delicate and soft but once you hold one of the figures you find that they are sturdier than they look.  The playsets are also made to last and will house the figures and entertain your children for years to come.
